Winning on your own

Tuesday 2 June 2015 -- 3:00pm

Last week's match was a comfortable win for the Popped Collars. The team posted a moderate total of 101 but defended it with little trouble, thanks mainly to Gareth producing supreme bowling figures of 7/-25. After the game, Trompf noted that Gareth's contribution of +44 was significantly more than the team's winning margin of 25. Hence the topic of today's blog.

Graphs - bowling

Tuesday 24 March 2015 -- 3:00pm

See the introduction to last week's post... except this time the graphs are for bowling figures.
For consistency, I'm only counting bowling figures for the first 2 overs bowled each match - that is, I've ignored all overs bowled as a "sub" when the team was short of players. Again, includes both Popped Collars and GG matches.

Milestone games

Tuesday 10 February 2015 -- 12:18pm

Last week was Gareth's 200th match for the Popped Collars and we celebrated with a good win over a very good opposition. Presumably we were inspired by Gareth personal milestone! If a few weeks time, Sanjit will reach 200 and Xavier 250 during the same match (assuming they both play all matches between now and then). Will we be inspired on that occasion as well? Will the individual players perform well? Or will the crumble under the pressure and emotion of the situation?
The stats cannot answer these questions (yet), but they can look at how players have performed in their milestone games in the past.

Gareth's s**t bowling

Tuesday 29 July 2014 -- 11:58am

Two weeks ago - the last game we played - was a good win for the Popped Collars. Individual performances within the game varied, and Dan was unfortunate to come away with some less-than-optimal bowling figures. In reading out the stats following the game, rather than offer quiet words of condolence (or just saying nothing) Gareth decided to point out just how s**t the figures were.

His comment apparently "didn't get the reaction [he] expected", and Dan sought revenge. The question was asked: What are Gareth's worst ever bowling figures?

On 6 occasions, G has come away with more than 40 runs off 2 overs. His worst ever is 1/47. Yes, there's a wicket - meaning he went for 52 runs off 15 balls. His first over (and the first over of the match) brought 0/31. Through two overs, he was hit to the back net 6 times.

Gareth actually had to bowl a 3rd over in that match as well - adding 15 more runs to his match tally of 1/62 off 3 overs.

As a side note, this was during the brief period where I was also recording who took catches and affected run-outs. It was me who took the catch to give Gareth his one wicket that game... you can thank me later, G.
